A Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite system developed by the United States Defense Department. This technology had been restricted to the government until it was released for civilian use in 1996. There are between 24 and 32 satellites that orbit the earth. The satellites transmit signals which enable GPS receivers to determine location, time, longitude, latitude, and velocity.
